Excerpts from Camille’s journey
In 2021, my original plan to study abroad in Japan was canceled due to COVID-19, but I was still able to study abroad virtually as a Gilman Scholar with Chonnam National University in South Korea. It was unexpected, but it turned out to be an awesome experience! I’m so thankful to CSUMB’s Education Abroad team for supporting me with my Gilman Scholarship and exchange program application.
My interest in Japanese culture only grew during my time at CSUMB, especially through friendships I built with international students from Japan. Their influence inspired me to apply to the JET Program—and today, I live in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, working as an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher).
Since graduating from CSUMB, I also completed my M.S. in Counseling and Student Affairs at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (Spring 2024). Looking ahead, I’m considering a Doctorate in International Education, and I see my JET experience as an invaluable foundation for that goal.
As an ALT, I work at four different elementary schools. My days are busy with 3–5 classes, where I assist Japanese Teachers of English with lessons, model conversations, and create fun English activities for the students. Outside of class, I enjoy playing with students, designing monthly English bulletin boards, and joining in school events.
Life in Japan has been full of cultural immersion. I’ve taken part in Awa Odori dancing, joined zumba classes with locals, and became a member of my town’s International Association. With the association, I even helped host a Thanksgiving cooking exchange!

The most rewarding part of this journey has been connecting with students, being part of their learning, and embracing the culture around me. It’s fulfilling both personally and professionally—and has deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity.
For anyone considering studying or working abroad, my advice is: Just go for it! The world is so big, with so many opportunities to learn, grow, and experience new perspectives.
