BUS 437 Applied Logistics students visit local ag businesses

Professor Sumadhur Shakya's BUS 437 students got a first-hand look at logistics and operations during tours of three local ag businesses, including Floricultura with Mr. Don Howell; Oceanmist with Mr. Glen Alameda; and Andy Boy with Mr. Jimmy Donangelo.

The first class tour was at Floricultura with Don Howell, who explained the operations, supply chain, and logistics of growing orchids using automation in greenhouse to the students of Applied Logistics. Mr. Howell also explained the planning, scheduling, and tracking of orchids over the growing period of over 16 weeks, before being shipped out to customers. Mr. Howell graciously donated an orchid of choice to each participant of the tour. The tour was attended by the students of Applied Logistics, and instructor Dr. Sumadhur Shakya, associate professor of operations management).

A tour of Oceanmist was guided by logistics manager, Glen Alameda. Mr. Alameda gave a detailed tour of the warehouse and cooling facility explaining the operations, supply chain, logistics, inventory, and transportation-related concepts to the students and Dr. Shakya.

Vegetable facility manager, Jimmy Donangelo, gave Applied Logistics students a tour of Andy Boy, including the warehouse and cooling facility. Mr. Donangelo explained operations, receiving, cooling warehousing, shipping, supply chain, logistics, inventory, and transportation-related concepts Mr. Donangelo also discussed the latest advancements in data management, electronic check-ins for truck drivers, and the challenges faced by the industry. The Andy Boy tour was also attended by Rick Paradis, and Briana Sanford of CSUMB University Advancement, Dr. Babita Gupta, professor of information systems, and Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma, assistant professor of computational chemistry, and Dr. Shakya.
