The Department of Health, Human Services, and Public Policy blends classroom learning with real-world practice.

You’ll explore the social, cultural and political forces that shape health and human services, while developing leadership and advocacy skills to serve diverse populations.

Service Learning and Fieldwork

All students participate in service learning and field placements with community agencies, schools, or public organizations. These hands-on experiences connect theory to practice, help you develop professional skills, and strengthen your commitment to community engagement.

Applied Research and Policy Focus

Coursework emphasizes applied research methods and the analysis of public policy. You’ll learn how to assess community needs, evaluate programs, and advocate for effective policies that promote health, justice, and equity.

Focus on Policy and Advocacy

Understanding policy is essential to creating lasting change. Throughout the program, you'll examine how laws, institutions, and public policies shape health and human services while learning to advocate for equitable solutions at the local, state, and national levels.

Whether analyzing legislation, engaging with community partners, or developing policy recommendations, you'll build the skills needed to become an informed leader and effective advocate for the communities you serve.

Career Outcomes

With a degree from the Department of Health, Human Services, and Public Policy, you’ll be prepared to serve communities and influence change across a variety of settings. Graduates build careers in public health, nonprofit organizations, social services, government agencies, and advocacy groups. Many also continue their education in public health, social work, law, or public policy, expanding their expertise and opening the door to leadership opportunities.

“I feel I’m actively working toward the change I want to be in the world and in my community.” — Marshall Farrior

Pathways to Graduate Studies

Many students continue their education through graduate programs in public health, social work, public policy, law, counseling, education, and related fields. The department's emphasis on research, service learning, and faculty mentorship provides a strong foundation for advanced study and professional leadership.

Whether your goal is to enter the workforce immediately or pursue a graduate degree, you'll graduate prepared to make a meaningful impact through service, research, advocacy, and leadership.
