Building a Community of Learners

A group of faculty at graduation

Regardless of your goals as a mathematician or statistician, the journey is better with others. We work hard to build community in our Department by creating opportunities and spaces for students to gather together for learning and fun! Whether a movie night, making origami, or engaging in community outreach, we enjoy gathering together regularly throughout the academic year.

  • Join our Math and Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) community if you plan to become a teacher! We meet approximately four times per semester to discuss issues related to math/science teaching and to becoming a teacher. We also share opportunities to participate in math/science teaching and learning activities for secondary students or teachers. This community is a great way to get to know other future teachers and faculty who provide support on your road to becoming a teacher!

    Spring 2024 MSTI Meeting Information
The first MSTI meeting/ Contemporary Education Forum for future Math/Science teachers will be TUES. Jan. 30 6:00-7:15pm in Chapman E127. We will have as a guest a CSUMB alum who is a math teacher, an instructional coach (for teachers) and an athletic coach at a Salinas middle school. We hope you can be there in-person, but if not, we will provide a Zoom link. You will receive calendar invites for all of our meetings this semester that will be held:
    - Tues. Jan. 30 6-7:15pm
    - Tues. Feb. 20 6-7:15pm
    - Tues. March 19 6-7:15pm
    - Tues. April 6pm-8pm (this semester's workshop/ "teach-in" instead of on a Saturday)
Please email Joanne Lieberman for more information.
If you participate in all the meetings above, you will receive a MSTI scholarship of at least $1,000.
In addition, we hope you will attend the all day Central Coast STEM Education Conference at the Monterey Conference Center on Saturday Feb. 3. If so, you will receive an additional $500 scholarship. Please reserve your spot here for the conference.

  • The Lounge is an area for students to gather, collaborate, and rest throughout the day. The Lounge has games, books, magazines, as well as calculators, white boards, and scrap paper so that whether you are working or need to relax, there is something for you.

Currently, the Lounge is open 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday in S211 (Chapman Science Center).

  • Gather with students across programs that have an interest and love for mathematics and statistics!

The Math and Stat club is dedicated to fostering an inclusive community of students who are passionate about mathematics and statistics. We also strive to strengthen the understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts through practical application and club activities. Finally, we are committed to supporting each member through their journey at CSUMB.

You can join via MyRaft to learn more about activities hosted by the club.
