Caroline Bolen, a current Environmental Science Master’s student, is currently completing a 400-hour internship with California State Parks as part of her Professional Science Master’s degree requirement. Caroline’s research focused on assessing species richness and abundance.

We recently touched base with Caroline to learn more about her research and overall experience as a CSUMB graduate student. Check out her interview below!

What organization are you working with on your PSM internship?

California State Parks, Monterey District

What is your title in this internship role?

Environmental Services Intern

In 3 - 4 sentences, describe the work you are doing at your internship site.

I am studying small mammals at Andrew Molera State Park. I am assessing species richness and abundance by trapping small mammals in different areas throughout the park during different seasons. One area received a prescribed burn in December, so I will also be able to look at how the burn affected species composition.

Who is your faculty advisor?

Dr. Jennifer Duggan

In a few sentences, how is your project contributing to your professional goals?

I have learned a lot about native and invasive plants along the central coast in addition to acquiring extensive small mammal trapping experience. I have also learned a lot about developing and executing a project by myself, which are all valuable skills that I am excited to apply throughout my career.

What is your favorite part about being a graduate student at CSUMB?

Aside from the invaluable professional skills I have acquired, my favorite part is the amazing friendships I've formed with my peers. I have had a wonderful time getting to know each and every one of my cohort members, who have all helped me in succeeding in this program. I truly could not have done it without them!

What are your plans after graduate school?

I am hoping to get experience in the consulting field after graduating but ultimately, I'd love to be an environmental scientist for Cal State Parks or the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Congratulations on your internship, Caroline! We look forward to seeing where your professional endeavors will take you!
