Department of Applied Environmental Science
August - September 2013
Undergraduate students Alex Blackwell (ESTP, ’13) and Patrick Carilli (Marine Science, ‘15) worked with Assistant Professor Cheryl Logan in the CSUMB Marine Environmental Physiology lab to deploy “robomussel” temperature loggers in the intertidal at Hopkins Marine Station. Loggers measured the internal body temperature of mussels mimics (mussel shells filled with silicone) for several weeks. The deployment was part of Blackwell’s Honors Senior Capstone project which investigated fine scale differences in cardiac physiology of mussels living in different microhabitats only a few meters apart. The project was funded by CSUPERB and COAST awards to Dr. Logan and a COAST student research award to Blackwell.
