ENSCI Student Defends Thesis on the Removal of Arundo donax During Wet and Dry Years
Savannah Saldana recently defended her thesis research “Evaluating Ecological Conditions of the Salinas River after the Removal of A. donax during Wet and Dry Years” in front of her committee and a public audience on Friday, May 3, 2024.
We reached out to Savannah following her successful defense to learn more about her thesis research and overall experience as an Environmental Science graduate student. Check out her interview below for more details!
Thesis title: "Evaluating Ecological Conditions of the Salinas River after the Removal of A.donax during Wet and Dry Years"
Faculty advisor: Dr. John Olson
What did your thesis research entail?
My research focused on the management of Arundo donax along the Salinas River, using invertebrates as biological indicators to evaluate potential ecological improvements. This process involved conducting bioassessments, where I set traps and manually collected invertebrates and over the course of my project, I identified over 2,000 insects!!
How has your thesis project contributed to your career goals?
Through my research, I've built a strong foundation in restoration and monitoring, which has been incredibly rewarding. I've spent many days in the field, collecting data and closely observing natural processes. Back in the lab, I've processed and analyzed this data. This hands-on experience has not only improved my technical skills but has also deepened my connection to the work I’m doing. It's gratifying to see how the data I gather contributes to our understanding of environmental restoration.
What is your favorite part about being a graduate student at CSUMB?
The community here has been the highlight of my graduate experience. I've formed lasting friendships and professional connections that have made me feel welcomed and supported throughout my studies.
What are your plans after graduate school?
After graduation, I plan to continue working at CSUMB. I am also considering pursuing a PhD in the near future.
Anything else that you'd like to share?
The experience at CSUMB has been transformative, not just academically but also personally. It has been a privilege to learn, grow, and contribute here, and I look forward to continuing my journey here at CSUMB.
Congratulations, Savannah! We look forward to seeing where your professional endeavors take you!
