Jeremiah Bautista joined the AES Department in 2020 and is a valued member of our department in his role as an Instructional Support Technician (IST).
Jeremiah supports students, staff, and faculty by preparing, coordinating, & delivering equipment and materials for numerous field and lab courses in the science departments. He also helps collect research samples for labs across campus!
We reached out to Jeremiah to learn more about what led him to CSUMB and his career. Check out his interview below!
What led you to CSUMB?
My wife accepted a job with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) here at CSUMB, leading us to Monterey, so I left my job as an Environmental Scientist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. I was the co-lead scientist for the San Francisco (SF) Bay Study project that monitored fish, crab, and shrimp populations in relation to freshwater outflow in the SF Estuary.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Flexibility to balance life and work is huge.
What courses are you supporting?
Mainly Geology and Physics, as well as some Environmental Science courses. However, I have helped with Biology, Agricultural Plant and Soil Science, and Marine Science courses, and even collected research samples (rockfish) for the Alter and Logan Labs.
What is your educational/professional background?
I have a BS in Marine Biology and an MS in Biology with a focus on Marine Fisheries. For my master's, I worked on recreational sportfish (Barred Sand Bass) and focused on life history traits such as age, batch fecundity, and spawning duration across southern California. I have worked on a wide variety of fishery-related topics, including CA Yellowtail genetics, artificial and natural reef fish production comparisons, and the impacts of parasites on endemic California fishes. I also focused on Grunion and fish histology.
What hobbies do you like to participate in during your free time?
I am an avid fisherman and love spending time with my boys in the tidepools, surfing, and the great outdoors. I'm looking forward to the day my little one catches her first fish. When we are not on the water, we play quite a few sports. I coach soccer and baseball here in the Marina leagues, and play in a co-ed softball league and men's softball tournaments. With three kids, it's hard to get away, but when we do, my wife and I love trying local breweries and new food places. Zumi Sushi in Pacific Grove has to be one of our favorites. Most of the time, we fire up the smoker, make some delicious BBQ, and end the night with some s’mores from the fire. The kids love it!
Anything else you'd like to share?
Truly blessed with where we live. Growing up in southern California, the beach was a minimum of 45 minutes away, and now it's in our backyard. I am grateful to work here at CSUMB and for all the opportunities it has brought and will bring to my family.
Thank you for all that you do for our students, staff, faculty, and department! We truly appreciate it!
