Ánh Cao, a current Environmental Studies major, recently returned from studying abroad in Taiwan for a year, where she had the opportunity to learn more about the natural resources and natural resource management in Taiwan. She was able to study abroad with the help of the CSU International Programs, which assists students interested in studying abroad. Through this program, CSUMB students can study abroad for up to a year in various countries, including Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and France.

We recently touched base with Ánh to learn more about her experience. Check out her interview below!

Where did you study abroad?

I studied abroad in Taiwan at the National Taiwan University (國立臺灣大學). I was part of the CSU International Programs.

What was your favorite part of studying abroad?

My favorite part about studying abroad is making new friends, traveling inside and outside the country, immersing myself in the culture, having dinner dates with friends, and going to cafes, clubs, and cultural events.

What type of classes did you take, and were any of the classes related to the types of classes you’re taking in the ENSTU program?

I'm an environmental studies major, so while at NTU, I was in the School of Forestry and Resources Conservation Department. A lot of the classes I took relate to my major like Coral Reef Ecosystem, Exploring Taiwan and its Natural Resources, Exploring Taiwan and Natural Resources Management, and Introduction to Field Geology. I also took a Chinese language class (for beginners) and ICL (International Companion for Learning); this is a class about cultural exchange.

What did you gain from this experience and does this experience contribute to your career goals?

I gained so many precious memories and new connections that I will always treasure for the rest of my life. Studying abroad has pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to explore myself outside of familial expectations and norms. I learned to be more independent and self-reliant when it comes to overcoming obstacles. I developed a better appreciation and understanding of other cultures and customs. At the same time, my awareness of my own cultural identity was enhanced as well. These are all important skills that would greatly contribute to my career goals.

What are your future plans (career, academic, etc.)?

I will be graduating this Fall of 2024. My plan is to do some fellowships so I can gain more working experience. Then, I plan to apply for a Master's degree. If there are opportunities for me to do my master's abroad, I would be open to it.

Any advice for fellow students interested in studying abroad?

Work on your VISA application early because it could take months for it to be successfully processed. When you are abroad, be flexible and open to new experiences. Not everyone has the opportunity to study abroad, so take advantage of it and try new things you have never done before!

Anything else you'd like to share

Choosing to study abroad has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I met many wonderful friends that I still keep in contact with. I hope to visit them in the future one day. Looking back at it now, even the hard times have now become fond memories. I had the best time and I would not have changed anything.

Congratulations on this exciting experience, Ánh!
