Vertical integration and the Spanish Program: Speaking and Writing activities
Saturday, October 31, 2015
Spanish is by far the most commonly studied language in California and a majority of college-bound students study Spanish for two, three, or more years. Students and teachers alike benefit when language programs contain well-sequenced and purposeful speaking and writing activities.
This workshop explores ways in which departments and instructors can work together to enrich the Spanish curriculum with thematically organized speaking and writing activities to help develop students’ language ability and confidence from the first year course up through the highest level, including AP. The workshop will explore to enhance students’ cultural proficiency, as well as how to use the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and other descriptors of students performance as a way to establish targeted proficiency outcomes for each level.
Presenter Jeffrey Reeder is a Professor of Spanish language, linguistics, and translation at Sonoma State University where he is also Coordinator of the Spanish program and Graduate Advisor of the Summer Master of Arts in Spanish program. Reeder has also been involved in teacher training and has worked with classroom teachers and student teachers in placements in over a dozen high schools and junior high schools. Reeder is a former member and chair of the College Board’s AP Spanish Language Development Committee, and he is currently the Chief Reader for the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. In his spare time, he is an avid archer and coach of the Sonoma State University archery team.
