Sustainable Hospitality Management Program Is Approved For Permanent Status
February 4th, 2020 - We are pleased to announce that the Sustainable Hospitality Management (SHM) program has been approved for permanent status, effective starting Fall 2020. The Program’s transition to permanent status means that its positive impact on the community will continue for years to come. MCHA Spotlight on Women in Leadership
On September 25th, 2019, the Monterey County Hospitality Association (MCHA) hosted an event at the Embassy Suites in Seaside, CA, to honor women from throughout the hospitality industry for their dedication to leadership and professional excellence in their roles. The MCHA 4th Annual Spotlight on Women Leadership Awards honorees included five women from CSU Monterey Bay’s Sustainable Hospitality Management program: Bachelor of Science students Magdalena Ferraro, Nichol Veles, and Abigail Castillo; Assistant Professor Dr. Roberta Atzori; and Administrative Support Coordinator Cynthia Satterlee-Donoghue.
Hospitality Students Win Annual CSU Student Research Competition
April 2019 - Brishna Nader and Cris de los Santos received first place honors in the 33rd Annual CSU Student Research Competition held at CSU Fullerton on Friday, April 26th, and Saturday, April 27th. This CSU-wide competition showcases the innovative research and creative activities of undergraduate and graduate students across all academic programs. Brishna and Cris competed in the Business, Economics and Public Administration category with their research project, entitled "The Role of Internal LOC in Driving Pro-Environmental Behavior in Hospitality".
SHM Program goes to ProStart
March 15, 2019 - The Sustainable Hospitality Management program was represented at the 2019 CA ProStart Cup in Pamona, CA, by program Executive Director John Avella, Professor Roberta Atzori, and Marquise from CSUMB admissions. The event stimulated a lot of interest in the program.
Sustainable Hospitality Management Students Strike Gold at Laguna Seca
March 2019 - What comes to mind when you think of Laguna Seca raceway -- the roar of revving engines, fabulous fast cars, thrilling high-speed competition, exciting events drawing spectators from near and far, and... traffic jams? This begs the question, posed by Salinas-based newspaper The Californian, is it "Worth the Traffic?"
2nd Monterey Bay Sustainable Hospitality Summit
January 2019 - The CSUMB Sustainable Hospitality Management Program held the 2nd Monterey Bay Sustainable Hospitality Summit at the Portola Hotel and Spa on January 11th, 2019. Speakers included Mayor of Dubrovnik, Croatia, Mato Frankovic ; Martha Honey, Ph. D., Founder and Executive Director for the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST); and Denise Naguib, Vice President, Sustainability and Supplier Diversity for Marriott International among many other public officials and industry leaders.
Sustainability with a Smile
Spring 2017 - Monterey Bay is at the forefront of Sustainable Hospitality thanks to CSUMB - A few years ago the hospitality management concentration in the College of Business began a rebirth. It added one very important word to its name and mission: sustainable; thus becoming the only program of its kind in the country. “I always knew that I wanted to go into hospitality and knew this was a great area,” says Emily Lewin, the assistant guest services manager at the Inn at Spanish Bay.
Sustainable Hospitality Management professors help students make community connections
Fall 2016 - Students in Dr. Atzori’s Sustainable Event Management course volunteer with local organizations. In September, they volunteered for the Jazz Festival, at Corral De Tierra, and at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Poppy Hills. An upcoming volunteer opportunity is November’s American Red Cross Farm to Table event.
Sustainable Hospitality Management Students Attend Stay Green Forum
Spring 2016 - A group of seven Sustainable Hospitality Management majors from CSU Monterey Bay attended the Hotel Council of San Francisco’s Stay Green Forum on February 17, 2016. The conference hosted by Hilton San Francisco Union Square featured a full day of panel discussions regarding sustainability in the hospitality industry. Breakout session topics included Guest Expectations in a Sustainable Stay, Innovations in Water Conservation and Energy Efficiency, and Marketing your Sustainability Story. There were also property tours to witness the sustainable operations of Hilton San Francisco Union Square, Hotel Nikko, and Clift. The forum was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about integrating sustainability into business, as well as to network with key industry players.
Sustainable Hospitality Management Program Nationally Ranked by Study.com
February 25, 2021 - Study.com has ranked the Sustainable Hospitality Management Program at CSUMB's College of Business #37 in their list "2021 Best Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management." Hundreds of universities across the country were considered based on their academic and career resources, the quality of education, and faculty among other items.
