SHM Program goes to ProStart

March 15-16, 2019 - Pomona, CA

(L to R) John Avella, Marquise, and Roberta Atzori represent SHM Program at 2019 ProStart.

The state's top high school student entrepreneurs, chefs, and innovators went head-to-head in the 17th annual CA ProStart Cup presented by BJ's Restaurants on March 15-16 in Pomona, CA.

The competition was fierce as students competed for major scholarships. Taco Bell and BJ's Restaurants will send the winners on the cross-country trip to represent California and compete at the National ProStart Invitational in Washington, D.C. in May.

ProStart is a 2-year high school program sponsored by the National Restaurant Association and management by California Restaurant Association Foundation (CRAF), that focuses on Hospitality, Culinary, and Management education. There are 139 ProStart schools in California with around 9,000 students involved. Each year CRAF hosts a state competition to qualify for the national championship. this year's competition was held in Pomona, CA. The Culinary competition involves teams from each school creating from scratch an appetizer, entree, and dessert within 30 minutes on a portable cooking station. The Management competition requires teams to develop a new restaurant concept including design, decoration, menu, marketing, and costs associated with each element. CSUMB’s Sustainable Hospitality Management program was represented at the event by program Executive Director John Avella, Professor Roberta Atzori, and Marquise from CSUMB admissions. The event stimulated a lot of interest in the program.
