ELD Hybrid Workshop: Opening windows of inclusion: Equitable Translanguaging in the ELD classroom
Program Description
From theory to the classroom, this hybrid one-hour zoom session on Day 1 will introduce theory and the 5-hour in-person session on Day 2 will provide the space to examine how TK-12 teachers and students collectively build classroom discourse and translanguaging strategies that reflects and empowers the repertoires of emergent plurilingual (EP) students. Through critical analysis of classroom practices, participants will deconstruct the key elements of equitable and inclusive learning and teaching. After the session, participants will be empowered and prepared to design lessons and units that: a) value and embrace the linguistic richness of EP students b) implement inclusive and authentic assessments, and c) include “intellectually rich, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that foster high levels of English proficiency” as well to maintain and amplify the students’ bi/plurilingualism. The ability to ask good questions requires flexible and critical thinking. Program summary:
In our first session, we will focus on how Eduprotcols can help Set The Tone for SEL and UDL in your classroom community. Universal Design for Learning (UDL), especially the Engagement Principle, has a strong connection to Social Emotional Learning (SEL). During this session, we will learn about the connection between SEL and UDL as we engage in Eduprotocols.
During our second session, we will look at how Eduprotocols can Ramp Up Rigor with the 4Cs in your classroom. One call to action in many of our standards is to prepare students for the“21st century” by ensuring students are college and career-ready. This preparation includes the use of the 4C’s (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking). Evidence of the need for these 4 C’s is embedded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL). To create truly student-centered, personalized learning opportunities, teachers must design lessons with intention. By adding a “C” to a lesson, we ramp up rigor and engagement.
