Steps to Service Learning

Step 4: SERVE!

Do not begin service until you've completed Steps 1-3!
During service, there are only two pieces within CalState S4/MySLP to address. You will undoubtedly have assignments for class and tasks for your service site outside of the system!

1. TIME LOGS

How to complete your Time Log & Request Approval of Hours

Students can request approval of hours from their site supervisor weekly, bi-weekly (every other week), or once at the end of service.

The system will not allow you to request approval more than once per week. This is so that students do not overwhelm supervisors’ email inboxes with individual hour approval requests.

IF you still need approvals more immediately, copy the "Direct Timelog link to send to your approver" into an email to your site supervisor from your own/CSUMB email address.  The URL is located in a box after you click on the Request Approval of Hours button.

2. EVALUATIONS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE BY AGENCY

Please complete the "Student Portion: Evaluation of Service-Learning Student Performance by AGENCY" form only after you have completed your hours or the end of the semester is near.

Your course professor may not require this form. Please double-check with them.

How to submit your portion of the Evaluation of Service Learning Student Performance by Agency form.

If you find your supervisor hasn't completed the form after a while or they didn't receive an email, follow these instructions to send the link directly to your site supervisor!

STUDENTS’ RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES DURING SERVICE

As you begin your service relationship with a community agency, you are probably eager to get involved and make a difference in the lives of people with whom you'll work and the agencies with which you'll serve. We expect that you will view yourself as a representative of CSUMB in the community. As such, we ask that you carefully read through and abide by the following guidelines created to assist you in having the best and most productive experience possible:

STUDENT EVALUATION OF THE SERVICE LEARNING EXPERIENCE (SESLE)

About 3 weeks prior to the end of the semester, you will also get an email with a link to evaluate YOUR service learning experience in our "Student Evaluation of the Service Learning Experience."  This survey:

  • is outside of the CalState S4/MySLP,
  • does not have an impact on your course grades (though some professors make this an assignment based on completion only; if your professor asks for proof of completion, please screenshot the final confirmation page), and
  • is used by the Service Learning Institute to analyze our impact and strategies for improvement.
