SEMESTER UPDATES

Spring 2020 MPUSD Orientation Dates

Attention Service Learning Students! If you would like to serve in a K-12 classroom within the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD), be sure to attend one of the mandatory orientations scheduled between Week #2 - Week #5. You cannot serve within MPUSD schools located in Marina, Seaside, and Monterey without attending an orientation session!

All orientations are held at the Service Learning Institute, Pacific Hall (Building 44), located across from the University Center. Please be on time! Late arrivals will be not be admitted. Also, be sure to bring the required documents listed below:

  • Week #2: Wednesday, January 29th @ 3:00 pm
  • Week #3: Wednesday, February 5th @ 9:00 am & Thursday, February 6th @ 1:30 pm
  • Week #4: Tuesday, February 11th @ 9:00 am & Friday, February 14th @ 1:30 pm
  • Week #5: Tuesday, February 18th @ 5:30 pm
  • Week #6: Monday, February 24th @ 11:00 am

Required Documents: MPUSD Orientation

  • Copy of TB test results OR the TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire. NOTE: The TB test is no longer required unless the questionnaire results deem there are risks associated. Students must take the TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire form to the Campus Health Center or any other licensed health care provider for completion.
  • Government Picture ID for Megan’s Law purposes (Drivers License, State issued ID, or Passport - your CSUMB ID is not sufficient!
  • MPUSD Form: Service Learner/Volunteer Liability Release & Agreements. (Available at the Orientation)
  • Name of the school where you wish to serve: You must provide MPUSD staff with the name of the school where you wish to serve. We recommend that you have 1-2 alternatives in case your desired school site is closed.

Week 1: Introduce Service Learning & Community Partners

Community Partner Fair: Monday, Jan. 27th, 11 am - 1 pm @ University Center

MPUSD Orientation (1st of 6 repeated sessions): Wednesday, Jan. 29th, 3 pm @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

Week 3: MPUSD Orientations

MPUSD Orientations: Wednesday, Feb. 5th, 9 am @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

MPUSD Orientations: Thursday, Feb. 6th, 1:30 pm @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

Week 4: MPUSD Orientations, MySLP Assistance (Drop-in)

MPUSD Orientations: Tuesday, Feb. 11th, 9 am @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

MPUSD Orientations: Friday, Feb. 14th, 1:30 pm @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

MySLP Assistance (Drop-in): Wednesday, Feb. 12th & Friday 14th (Times & Locations to be announced)

Service Learning Process (Students):

  • Students visit their service site, confirming their service schedule with site supervisor and begin their first week of service hours.
  • Due: Service Learning Agreement (paper)
  • Due: MySLP Site Registration (online)

Week 5: MPUSD Orientations, Service Week 2

MPUSD Orientations: Monday, Feb. 17th, 11 am @ SLI, Pacific Hall (Building #44)

MPUSD Orientations: Tuesday, Feb. 18th, 5:30 pm @ SLI Pacific Hall (Building #44)

Service Reflection #1 (ASSUMPTIONS):

  • What were my assumptions about my service site, and how were they similar to or different from what I actually experienced on my first visit?

Week 6: MySLP Assistance (Drop-in), Service Week 3

MySLP Assistance (Drop-in): Wednesday, Feb. 26th & Friday, Feb. 28th (Times and locations to be announced)

Annual Spotlight on Service - Celebrating Graduating Students by Major for Outstanding Service: ANNOUNCEMENT, NOMINATION FORM & LIST OF 2020 GRADUATES (Sent to SL Faculty & Dept. Chairs: Monday, February 24, 2020)

Week 7: Service Week 4

Service Reflection #2 (POWER, IDENTITY & SERVICE):

  • How are my social group identities similar to and different from the people I engage with at my service site? How does “social power” show itself at my service site? How does “social power” affect how we view each other and how we interact at the service site?

Week 8: Service Week 5

NOMINATIONS DUE: Annual Spotlight on Service - Celebrating Graduating Students by Major for Outstanding Service: Monday, March 16th @ 2020

Week 9: Service Week 6

Announcement - Presentation Guidelines:

  • Service Learning Student Presentations @ Salinas Center: Friday, May 1, 2020, 5 - 9 pm

Service Reflection #3: CIVIC POWER & SERVICE

  • How is my service site affected by wider civic processes, structures, and decision-making? How do the issues that are important to my service site get voiced in wider society?

Week 10: Service Week 7 (SPRING BREAK WEEK)

Service Reflection #4 (RECIPROCITY & COMMUNITY-BUILDING):

  • What have I learned from the people at my site, and what have they learned from me? How have I “served” the people at my site, and how have they “served” me?

Week 15:

DUE: Service Learning Activity & Time Log (required document)

DUE: Service Learner Evaluation by Community Partner (optional)

Week 16: Final Presentations

DUE: Student Evaluation of SL Experience (online) SURVEY CLOSES 11:59 PM FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2020

Service Requirements:

  • 25 - 30 hours of service = 3 hours/week x 8 - 10 weeks
  • Civic Action Activity: Action for Systemic Change

Required Service Learning Risk Management Forms/Processes: (EO 1064)

  • Learning Agreement (paper copy; before service begins)
  • MYSLP community partner site registration
  • Service Activity & Time Log (paper copy; at the end of service)
  • Review “Guiding Principles to Reduce Risks”

Optional (Strongly Recommended) Forms/Processes:

  • Evaluation of Service Learning by Community Partner (paper; after completing service)
  • Student Evaluation of the Service Learning Experience (online; at the end of semester)

Legally Mandated Storage of Formal Agreements:

  • Signed Service Learning Agreements
  • Signed Service Learning Time Logs
