Student Leaders Present at Conferences
In spite of the pandemic, our Service Learning Student Leaders (Squares) are still finding ways to connect with and service our communities! One such opportunity came by way of co-hosting a two-day virtual conference, We Have the Truth, We Are the Youth, with MILPA, a non-profit organization based in Salinas that focuses on cultivating leaders for future generations. The conference was held in November and had the goal of engaging and inspiring local youth in Monterey County. Originally planned for last spring, Covid-19 forced both the Service Learning Institute and MILPA to restructure the entire event. Despite the virtual nature of the conference, the workshop sessions were able to draw many participants. The workshops were engaging and diverse; the Squares created and offered the following workshops:
- Power Mapping: Ah Lei Mai Lee, Carlos Magallanez Jr. & Rena Dillenbeck
- Psychological Effects of School to Prison Pipeline: Lily Vang & Dulce Montano
- Basic Needs: Dalia Nino-Canizal & Lesly Morales
- Approaching Media Representation & Gentrification: Sadie Brown, Clarissa Murillo, & Alicia Alderete
Our Squares also presented at the LIFT Conference, hosted virtually by Fresno State University. This provided an opportunity to network with other student leaders across the state around the topics of social justice and equality. For most of these Squares, this was their first time presenting at a conference. Regardless of the circumstances, each leader handled the moment with poise and the feedback from conference attendees was overwhelmingly positive.
