TLA-CAT NIP Summer Institute - 2017

TLA-CATNIP (Center for Academic Technologies - New Instructional Powers) provides opportunities for faculty and student affairs professionals to learn about and play with new ways to enhance student learning.

9:00 - 10:30 am: Creating the Engaged Learner Part I

Facilitator: Denise Castro

Guest presenters: George Beckham, Stephanie Johnson, Ryan Luke, and Natasha Oehlman

Participant learning outcomes

  • Panelist presentations (flash); moderated QA with panel and participants
  • Participants will be able to identify what constitutes an engaged learner
  • Participants will be able to evaluate the value of using creative assignments and instructional materials to engage learners
  • Participants will identify an assignment/activity in their own course that could be transformed into a more engaging activity

10:30 - 12:00 pm: iLearn: What's New


Description: Overview of end user changes to iLearn - new features for feedback and more.

1:00 - 2:30 pm: Open Educational Resources


Description: Help reduce textbook costs for students. Participants will evaluate and select free instructional materials to supplant traditional retail instructional materials (textbooks, fee-based publisher content etc.)

Facilitators: Jacqui Grallo, Marc Oehlman, and Jill Yamashita

Participant learning outcomes

  • Identify open educational resources (OER) or low cost instructional materials
  • Learn strategies for lowering textbook costs for students
  • Learn about opportunities for mini-grants through the CO for OER materials development

2:30 - 4:00 pm: Accessibility

Facilitators: Cindy Compean and Marc Oehlman

Participant learning outcomes

  • Self-evaluate your teaching practices as they pertain to universal access
  • Self-evaluate your instructional materials as they pertain to accessibility
  • Identify areas that may need accommodation
  • Develop accessible materials in Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat

Tuesday, June 6th - All sessions in Gambord 223

9:00 - 10:00 am: Creating the Engaged Learner Part II

Description: Follow-up from Monday session homework - small group discussions and report out.

Facilitator: Marc Oehlman

10:00 - 11:30 am: Learning Assessment Techniques

Description: Learn about Barkley and Major's new approach to using course-level assessment of student achievement to improve student learning.

Participant learning outcomes

  • Apply Dee Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning to a course
  • Use the LAT framework to design course-level student learning assessment projects
  • Document evidence of student learning for professional teaching and RTP portfolios

Facilitator: Dan Shapiro, Director, Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment

11:30 - 1:00 pm: Transparent Assignment Design

(light snacks provided)

Description: Participants will learn about the work of the Transparency and Problem-Centered Learning initiative, and the benefits of this teaching approach, while having the opportunity to apply this framework to their own assignments.

Facilitator: Ryne Leuzinger, Library Faculty

Participant learning outcomes

  • Explain how transparently designed assignments offer equitable opportunities for all college student to succeed.
  • Identify transparent assignment design strategies in sample assignments.
  • Apply transparent assignment design strategies by creating a draft assignment.

1:00 - 2:30 pm: Visualizing Critical Thinking

Description: Participants in this interactive workshop will learn how to guide students through the process of creating and using images to deepen student understanding of what critical thinking is and how to apply it.

Facilitator: Swarup Wood, Critical Thinking Assessment Coordinator and First Year Seminar Coordinator

Participant outcomes

  • Use an understanding how brains interact with images to help inform how they create images of critical thinking.
  • Determine the relationships between and among VALUE Rubric Critical Thinking criteria and develop diagrams that illustrate those relationships.

2:30 - 4:30 pm: Individual & Institutional Wellness

Description: Facilitated dialog for faculty, student affairs professionals, and other university staff on exploring strategies for supporting individual & institutional health at CSUMB.

Facilitators: Caroline Haskell, Director of Health and Wellness Services and Founding Director of the Personal Growth and Counseling Center and Dan Shapiro, Director for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
