Reading Apprenticeship at CSUMB

Limited to CSUMB faculty (part- and full-time lecturers and tenure line)

Let us know if you are interested in taking a Reading Apprenticeship 6-week, asynchronous online course offered through WestEd. Limited to CSUMB faculty. We will accommodate interested faculty if funds are available. 

Reading Apprenticeship Communities of Practice

Facilitated by faculty trained in Reading Apprenticeship, Communities of Practice meet 4 - 5 times over the semester to provide camaraderie and real-time support for faculty who want to improve their expertise in using Reading Apprenticeship to improve student learning. Faculty teaching courses at any level and in any discipline are welcome. Participants are expected to implement Reading Apprenticeship routines and strategies in their classes and must have prior exposure to Reading Apprenticeship (e.g. participation in the Introduction to Reading Apprenticeship Planning Week workshop describe above).

About Reading Apprenticeship

Reading Apprenticeship instructional routines and approaches are based on a framework that describes the classroom in terms of four interacting dimensions: Social, Personal, Cognitive, and Knowledge-Building. Those routines have been used extensively in community colleges and increasingly in four-year universities. The Reading Apprenticeship framework draws on the strengths students and faculty bring to build confidence and power to their work with texts, concepts, and each other. With a focus on apprenticing students into the problem-solving strategies of disciplines, Reading Apprenticeship helps students master core concepts and helps instructors explicitly support academic literacy in their discipline.
