Study Abroad in Yucatan- Summer 2015

Swim in the lush turquoise waters of the Caribbean, make friends with Mayan students at the Universidad Intercultural Maya, and learn about the longest living civilization in the Americas through this new study abroad experience in Mexico!

Dean Rios-Ellis with the community health workers in Yucatan

Dean Rios-Ellis of CHSHS was awarded a $25,000 from the 100,000 Strong initiative to establish and fund a study abroad program in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. This experience will include guided visits to archaeologic sites, non-profit organizations, clinics, hospitals and foundations. This effort will include a service learning opportunity wherein students will partake in community-based participatory research with a select Mayan community in collaboration with the Fundacion de las Haciendas Mundo Maya to assess their nutritional, activity and water sanitation needs. The major focus of this GE course is on the impact of societal changes on the nutrition and exercise-related health behaviors of one of the most ancient groups of peoples in the world, the Maya.

A maximum of 20 students, from any college at CSUMB, will be selected to participate in this exciting opportunity! There are a limited number of partial travel scholarships available. The trip will commence June 23rd through July 5th. Please contact Daniela Armenta at (831) 582-3736 or darmenta@csumb.edu for more information.
