Professional Development & Training

CSUMB offers a variety of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff across the University. CAT and TLA offer ongoing workshops throughout the year in addition to winter and summer institutes to support faculty scholarship.

For upcoming events, please contact cat@csumb.edu or visit the CAT homepage.

Professional Development Courses

Free, self-guided courses are available in Canvas and provide the opportunity to grow at your own pace. These courses are facilitated by the CAT team, and if you are a CSUMB faculty, you can click the course titles below to instantly self-enroll in the course. Topics include:

  • Accessible & Equitable Digital Content: Learn how to create content for your online courses and beyond that meet accessibility guidelines and support diverse learners.
  • Growing with Canvas (beginner): Learn how to use Canvas features to create and develop a basic online, hybrid, or web-enhanced course (tech-focused).
  • Canvas: Beyond the Basics (intermediate): Learn to use the more advanced Canvas features, such as gradebook settings, course templates, undeleting content, mastery paths, embedding videos, collaborative documents, quiz question banks, SpeedGrader rubrics, Analytics and more!
  • Resilient Teaching: Redesign your course to ensure continuity during times of change and disruption, adapt your course to be effective in multiple modes of delivery (online, concurrent, flipped, face-to-face, hybrid), and add alternative means of representations, presentation and assessment using multiple technologies to engage and support students.
  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Tools for Teaching and Learning: Learn what AI tools are available, how students are using AI, how you can use AI as a teaching tool, how to detect AI usage, and develop your own AI policies in the classroom.

Additionally, CSU Online Course Services through the Chancellor's Office offers FREE professional development courses each semester (even in summer).
