2021 Annual Accounting Networking Event a Great Success

Students talking to Exhibitors

September 23, 2021 –

More than 85 participants attended the 2021 Accounting Networking Event (ANE), including 46 CSUMB students and 42 representatives from the accounting and financial planning communities. Tables were hosted by 18 accounting firms, companies, and other organizations in CSUMB’s University Center Ballroom. Accounting and Finance concentration students were able to discuss careers, internships, graduate degree programs, and service opportunities with partners, staff, and executives from a wide range of international corporations, accounting firms, wealth management firms, and other organizations. This year, the College of Business launched its new Financial Analysis track within the Accounting concentration. "We were delighted to have five professional financial planners among the attendees, sharing information about their careers with our new students in this track," remarked Dr. Sharon Hua, CSUMB Assistant Professor of Accounting.

The annual event is organized by members of the College of Business Accounting faculty. The ANE steering committee includes Dr. Sharon Hua, Dr. Mary Anne Majadillas, Dr. Gary Schneider, and Distinguished Lecturer Jeffrey Froshman.

To prepare students for the event, Dr. Schneider produced an “Accounting Resumes 101” video; Dr. Hua provided tips on how to dress professionally and how to make a winning elevator pitch, and both of them held a Saturday one-on-one resume workshop before the event.

Accounting professionals attending were impressed with the students and some conducted impromptu interviews during the event. Michael Bryant, Partner at Wheeler Accountants (San José, CA), wrote, “Thank you for the great in-person event. My team enjoyed meeting the students face to face. We spoke to some excellent candidates today and fingers crossed that a few of them will come to work at Wheeler.”

Eleonora Garra, a CSUMB alumnus who works for McGilloway, Ray, Brown & Kaufman, told us, “It was nice to see everybody in person. MRBK enjoyed being there, and we look forward to hiring another CSUMB Otter!”

“So many talented, bright students,” declared Susan Kendall, CPA, Kendall Wealth Partners.

Students were very positive about their experiences at the event as well.

“I'm extremely grateful for the event because I wouldn't have been able to connect or get my resume out there,” expressed Maritza Mendoza.

“I learned a great deal from this event, and I appreciate the support of all the faculty,” said Emily Chan.

Christal Paz reflected, “The Accounting Networking Event helped me step out of my comfort zone and start talking to people.”
