Marine Science Professor Elected to AGU Board of Directors
Dr. Corey Garza, Professor in the Department of Marine Science, was recently elected to the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Board of Directors. AGU aims to advance discovery and solution science that accelerate knowledge and create solutions that are ethical, unbiased and respectful of communities and their values.
As an integral part of this team, Dr. Garza hopes to assist with advancing AGU's strategic goal of catalyzing discovery and solutions to scientific and societal challenges. He is particularly excited about the opportunity to continue to promote and exemplify an inclusive scientific culture alongside the society. Dr. Garza has extensive experience in advancing diversity and inclusion in the geosciences through his past experience with the Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and AGU's Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee.
At CSUMB, Dr. Garza serves as the Director of the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Program (CMEP); which aims to support basic research to increase our understanding of coastal and marine ecosystems. He also oversees the Marine Landscape Ecology Lab (MLEL) where they specialize in the use of geospatial technologies and spatial statistics to study the relationship between habitat complexity and patterns of species distribution and abundance in marine communities.
