Biography
Luiz André Barroso is the Vice-President of Engineering and a Google Fellow. His team is responsible for collecting and curating maps, local knowledge and imagery data that powers many Google products. He was previously the technical lead for Google’s computing infrastructure and has also worked on a number of software infrastructure projects. Luiz has published several technical papers and has co-authored “The Datacenter as a Computer”, the first textbook to describe the architecture of warehouse-scale computing systems, now in its 3rd edition. Before Google, he was a member of the research staff at Digital Equipment Corporation, where his group did some of the pioneering research on modern multi-core processor architectures. Luiz is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica of Rio de Janeiro, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California.
