Jacob’s advice to other undergraduates is this, “Find the people who care about you, will advocate for you, and believe in where you’re going and what you’re doing.”

The Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship is meant for students who wish to continue their education to the doctorate level, but have faced obstacles that may impede their goal of obtaining a PhD and eventually professorship at a CSU. Through hard work, and an honorable passion for his studies, Jacob Green is one of four CSUMB students to recently receive this award!
The valuable research Jacob is involved in and his passion for applying it in a viable way to better the community are just the beginning of why he definitely deserves this scholarship. In Cheryl Logan's lab, Jacob uses next generation technology to participate in groundbreaking research on rockfish. He and the team he works with in the lab, look at how stressors like ocean acidification, hypoxia, and temperature affect rockfish. They’re primarily concerned with individuals at the larval stage and up, on a molecular level. “We know so little about what goes on there (in the ocean), and what we do know, hasn't always given us the picture that we had hoped. Molecular biology offers a way to fill in some of those gaps in the picture.” Rockfish are a very important species, both economically and ecologically. This research has not only begun to open doors for Jacob himself, but the conclusions it leads to have the ability to shape businesses and the community here in Monterey.
He will graduate from CSUMB in the spring of 2018, with a bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Chemistry minor. The Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship has given Jacob the opportunity to explore his options, and he said, “I know for sure that I’m going to Graduate school now.” He hopes to become a Professor in the CSU system, but more importantly, a Professor with a lab.
Congratulations Jacob Green, we're so excited for you!
