Theme Communities
At Cal State Monterey Bay, Theme Communities offer students the opportunity to live in a community of individuals who represent many perspectives, beliefs and identities. These communities provide a supportive environment where students can connect, participate in community events, and engage in activities related to their shared interests.

1st Year Success
- Open to all first-year students
- First Year Success is a welcoming community designed to support all first-year students as they transition to college life. This community is especially supportive of first-generation students, TRIO participants, CAMP students, and anyone seeking extra guidance in their first year. Join us to connect with campus traditions, discover academic resources, and gain tips and tricks for making the most of your experience at CSUMB.
Otters in Science
- Open to all first-year students
- Calling all first-year students interested in studying the sciences at Cal State Monterey! Meet other scientific otters as you live in a community that will help you build relationships with faculty members, create positive study habits, as well as find the social and academic support that is essential to academic success. This community is located in close proximity to Chapman Science Center and the Library!
Lavender Living
- Residence Hall Communities open to first-year students
- This community celebrates diversity and welcomes students looking to connect with others in the LGBTQIA+ community. With gender-inclusive housing, it provides a supportive space where students can feel comfortable and be themselves.
Health and Wellness
- Open to all first-year students
- The Health and Wellness Theme Community is for residents that care about living a full and healthy life in all areas of wellness, including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and more! Residents will explore their personal wellness journey and build a community where they’ll support each other’s goals.
Africana Heritage Scholars
- Open to all first year students
- The Africana Heritage Scholars Theme Community brings together students who want to celebrate and center the identities and experiences of the African Diaspora, including African, Caribbean, Black, African American, and Afro-Latinx. Through a Pan-African lens, residents will explore identity, history, heritage, and culture while building connections with peers who share similar values, social interests, and academic goals.

Transfer Community
- Open to all transfer students
- Working with the Transfer Student Success Center, this community provides spaces in our Promontory Apartments for students who are transferring and who want additional support in navigating the Cal State Monterey Bay environment and getting connected to campus resources.
- Working with the Transfer Student Success Center, this community provides space in our Promontory Apartments for transfer students who seek additional support in navigating the academic and cultural landscape of CSUMB and getting connected to campus resources and fellow transfer student community.
