Responsible AI Use at CSU Monterey Bay
Overview
CSU Monterey Bay is committed to the ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Our goal is to leverage AI in ways that enhance education, research, and administrative operations while upholding the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency. This page outlines our guidelines for responsible generative AI use across our campus community.
Guidelines for Responsible AI Use
- Ethical Use: AI usage must comply with campus, course, and institutional policies, including academic integrity and acceptable use policies. Users of AI at CSUMB must be accountable for the outcomes of AI systems and their impact on society.
- Limits of use: Faculty have the authority to determine how AI is used in their courses and should communicate these expectations clearly in their syllabi. They should also guide students in understanding ethical and responsible AI use within their academic discipline.
- Attribution: When AI is used to generate content, students and faculty should follow appropriate citation practices as determined by the course, discipline, or institution to maintain and model academic integrity.
- Fairness: When using AI, users should be aware of potential biases in AI systems and actively review AI output for fairness and inclusivity. AI-generated content should be critically examined to ensure it does not reinforce stereotypes or misinformation.
- Security: Content shared with AI systems may not be secure and, in some cases, may be used to train the AI model. Users should review all shared content to ensure it does not contain personally identifiable information or sensitive university business practices. AI tools identified as “campus-supported” should be considered first when a need for security is required. Currently, Open AI’s ChatGPT Edu and Google Gemini are supported using your CSUMB log in.
- Human Oversight: AI systems should complement human decision-making, not replace it. Our goal is to ensure that humans remain in control and can intervene when necessary.
- AI Literacy and Critical Thinking: Faculty, staff, and students should develop AI literacy skills, critically evaluate AI-generated content, and understand its limitations. AI should be used as a tool to enhance learning and creativity, not as a substitute for critical thinking and independent work.
