Congratulations to Erin Ramirez, CSU Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge Awardee!

Erin Ramirez, Associate Professor, Education and Leadership

Three Cal State Monterey Bay instructors will be at the forefront of introducing artificial intelligence into the California curriculum. Each has received grants through the CSU Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge Awards. Erin Ramirez, an associate professor with CSUMB's College of Education and one of the grant recipients, said that such an approach is essential.

"If we turn our backs on AI, we're doing everyone a disservice," Ramirez said. "Let's harness it for good and teach students how to use it, when it's appropriate and when it's not." She'll be using the grant money to bolster an educator preparation program, integrating the use of the technology into seven core classes that students working toward a secondary teaching credential are required to take. Tasks in the courses will highlight ethical uses of AI and how to teach AI in grades 6 to 12.

She likened the introduction of AI to the advent of the internet 30 years ago. "The way we used to think about search engines is how I now think about AI," she said. "When Google came about, you learned how to ask it the right search prompts to get better results."

Teaching & Learning

We recognize the unique challenges of higher education—balancing rigorous coursework, developing independent study and interactive skills, managing increased responsibilities, and navigating complex academic and social environments. We are in partnership with students as they face these challenges.

Student Conduct

Our campus is dedicated to supporting students’ growth by providing guidance when they face difficult decisions, celebrating their ethical choices, and creating classroom environments built on mutual respect and trust.

Student Support

We honor students by providing them with the resources, mentorship, and community they need to succeed. Whether they are mastering challenging concepts, developing research skills, exploring career paths, or simply adjusting to college life, we're here to support their academic and personal development every step of the way.

Social Mobility

Our commitment to social mobility drives us to provide comprehensive career development opportunities that empower every student to achieve their professional aspirations and transform their future.

The Sponsored Programs Office (SPO) at CSUMB helps faculty, staff, and researchers secure and manage external funding for projects, research, and creative activities. They provide support throughout the grant process, including proposal development, budget preparation, and compliance with university and sponsor requirements. Their goal is to make it easier for the CSUMB community to pursue innovative work that benefits students and the broader community.

Data Dashboards, Tools, and Resources

Institutional Assessment and Research (IAR) builds and supports data tools for the campus for institutional improvement, assessment, and monitoring student success. As the 2025 CSUMB Strategic Plan prioritizes "data-driven approaches to ensure all students have the tools to graduate on time and succeed," IAR works with campus partners and faculty to apply a range of powerful resources needed for continuous improvement of academic programs and courses. In collaboration, we make strategic and timely adjustments to ensure students have equitable opportunities for success.
