Marine Mammal Training Monterey Bay

BIO 148 - Introduction to Animal Training (asynchronous online)

Offered entirely online asynchronously. Explores the field of animal training from a psychological and a technical perspective. Provides a theoretical background in relevant animal behavior and psychological principles related to the practical goal of modifying captive animal behavior using dozens of animal videos across both exotic and domestic species. Topics include the history and ethics of animal use and training, and practical animal training techniques. There is a virtual internship video from the perspective of caring for research-trained sea lions at Moss Landing Marine Labs. (Offered through Extended Education.)

BIO 347Working With Marine Mammals (asynchronous online)

Offered entirely online asynchronously. Explores current topics and careers working with marine mammals. Topics include practical knowledge of captive marine mammal husbandry (care and maintenance), training, basic physiology, an overview of common research topics and techniques, as well as public display, education, and current issues and policy in marine mammalogy. There is a virtual internship video from the perspective of caring for research-trained sea lions at Moss Landing Marine Labs. (Offered through Extended Education.) Requires completion of a college biology course.

(Prereq: GE Area A1 and A2 and A3 and B4 with a C- or better)
