Take a class at MIIS or UCSC
CSUMB has entered into exchange agreements with Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and University of California Santa Cruz. These exchange agreements enable graduate students at each institution to take certain courses at the other institution, if approved to participate in the exchange.
The institution where a student is formally enrolled to pursue a degree is considered the student’s home institution. The institution where the student is enrolling in an exchange class is considered the host institution. Students enrolled at the host institution are non-degree students who receive full credit in the course.
Access will be limited to students determined to be qualified by the course instructor and availability of space in the requested course, with the understanding that priority will be given to students of the home institution. Students will be responsible for any additional course fees associated with some classes.
You are eligible to take a class at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey if you have met all of the following requirements:
- you are enrolled in a degree program at CSUMB and are approved to participate in the exchange program
- you have completed appropriate academic preparation for the course you intend to take as determined by the host campus. The host campus is where you will take the exchange class.
- you are approved as qualified by the instructor of the class you wish to enroll in and subject to the availability of space in the requested course, with the understanding that priority will be given to students of the home institution.

Approval of exchange enrollment is valid for only the term specified and is subject to space availability, deadline, registration procedures and priorities of the host campus. You must re-apply for each term you wish to enroll.
You will not be charged additional registration fees or tuition at the host campus. However, you shall be responsible for payment of the cost of books, other course materials, and other fees specific to the course.
You may register for up to four credits per semester at Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. MIIS students may register for up to four credits per semester at CSUMB.
You may register for up to ten quarter credits per year of graduate coursework in any of the following University of California Santa Cruz graduate programs: Environmental Studies, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Coastal Science and Policy. You must comply with the host institution's applicable policies, procedures, and rules.
Records of credit earned through exchange enrollment are maintained at the host campus. You can request transcripts to be sent to your home institution to ensure transfer of course credit. Please follow the host institutions' instructions for ordering transcripts.
Step 1 Contact the CSUMB representative responsible for administering the exchange program to request information on program procedures or permission to participate.
- If you are interested in enrolling at MIIS, contact your advisor, program coordinator, or department chair.
- If you are interested in enrolling at UCSC, contact the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
Step 2 Review course availability at the host campus (MIIS or UCSC) and determine course(s) of interest.
Step 3 Contact the instructor of the host campus (MIIS or UCSC) course for permission to enroll in the desired course. The instructor may provide permission through campus email or signature approval in part 2 of the application for exchange enrollment form.

Be sure to attach email copies to the form if advisor/instructor permissions were granted via campus email. Students will be notified of their status in the program and provided direction by the host institution for establishing access to that institution’s student information and learning management systems. The host campus registrar or designee should certify your enrollment by completing part 4 of the application for exchange enrollment form or providing an enrollment verification.
