Supporting Faculty Excellence

Academic Personnel, a unit within Human Resources, supports faculty and academic employees across the full faculty lifecycle at Cal State Monterey Bay.

We provide guidance, oversight and administrative support for:

  • Faculty recruitment and appointments
  • Retention, Tenure and Promotion (RTP)
  • Sabbatical and difference-in-pay leaves
  • Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP)
  • Compensation and salary placement
  • Academic student appointments (Unit 11), including Teaching Associates, Graduate Assistants and Instructional Student Assistants

Academic Employee Classifications

At Cal State Monterey Bay, academic employees are represented by CSU bargaining units, primarily Unit 3 and Unit 11. Your unit determines the policies, benefits and contract provisions that apply to your role.

Unit 3 employees are represented by the California Faculty Association (CFA).

At Cal State Monterey Bay, Unit 3 includes:

  • Tenured and tenure-track faculty
  • Lecturers (temporary faculty)
  • Coaches
  • Counselors
  • Librarians

Unit 3 faculty and academic employees are primarily responsible for:

  • Teaching and instruction
  • Scholarly and creative activity
  • Academic advising
  • Librarianship and counseling services
  • Service to the university and community

Employment terms, compensation, leaves and evaluation processes are governed by the Unit 3 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Unit 11 employees are represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) under the CSU system.

At Cal State Monterey Bay, Unit 11 includes:

  • Teaching Associates (TAs)
  • Graduate Assistants (GAs)
  • Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs)

Unit 11 academic student employees are:

  • Currently enrolled students
  • Appointed in part-time roles
  • Engaged in instructional or instructional-support activities related to their academic programs

Duties may include:

  • Teaching or leading course sections (Teaching Associates)
  • Assisting faculty with research or instructional support (Graduate Assistants)
  • Supporting classroom or laboratory instruction (Instructional Student Assistants)

Terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Unit 11 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
