John Short, Deputy Chief

Deputy Chief John Short came to the University Police Department in May 2011 from Monterey Police Department where he worked for over 21 years.

Deputy Chief Short began his career in law enforcement in 1984, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard until 1989. Deputy Chief Short conducted maritime law enforcement/narcotics interdiction and fisheries patrols along the West Coast from Mexico to Canada while stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Clover. Deputy Chief Short also participated in search and rescue operations in Alaska and Lake Michigan, stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Cape Jellison and at Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay.

In 1989, Deputy Chief Short attended the Basic Police Academy at Evergreen College in San Jose, CA, and began working for the Monterey Police Department as a police officer.

While serving at the Monterey Police Department as a police officer and sergeant for over 21 years, Deputy Chief Short held various positions including firearms instructor, less lethal weapon instructor, TASER instructor, armorer, incident response team member, DUI Enforcement Team member, Citizen’s Police Academy instructor, field training officer, terrorism liaison officer, and training and recruiting sergeant.

Deputy Chief Short is a graduate of Monterey High School, received an associate degree in Administration of Justice from Monterey Peninsula College, and attended CSU Fresno.
