Student names
Your name is important, let's make sure we get this right.
People on campus can have two types of names: a legal primary name, and a preferred name. Changing either of these requires different steps and have different effects.
Your legal name is the one that is printed on a Driver's License, Passport, or other government-issued ID. If you change your name through the courts, including through marriage, you should let the campus know.
Legal names are used on official documents issued by the campus, like paychecks and transcripts.
Use the Student Personal Information Change form to update or correct your legal/primary name, Social Security Number, date of birth, or gender.
Your preferred name is used on many online systems, including the campus website and Canvas. You can change your preferred name at any time in OASIS, but these changes can take a few days to show up everywhere on campus. To change your preferred name:
- Log into OASIS.
- Select Self Service.
- Under Personal information, select Names.
- You should have a Preferred name in the list of names. Select Edit next to it.
- Edit your name information and select Save.
- Please allow two to three days for all systems to be updated.
Your campus email name (your full name, not your email address) will be updated two days after it is changed in OASIS.
Your email address (i.e., jotter@csumb.edu) and CSUMB username (i.e., ottr1234) cannot be changed.
Your full name always appears in emails.Beginning with the 2023-2024 graduating class, the diploma name will be used as the name printed on the diploma. If no action is taken to update your diploma name by the deadline, your diploma will reflect your primary/legal name.
To add or change your diploma name:
- Log into OASIS.
- Select Self Service.
- Under Personal information, select Names.
- You may already have a Diploma name in the list of names. Select Edit next to it.
- If you do not have a diploma name type, click Add a new name.
- Edit your name information and select Save.
Be advised that in certain circumstances, your diploma may be considered an official document, and the name appearing on your diploma will need to match other official documents such as official transcripts (which use legal name) passport, or other documents for legal, immigration or employment purposes.
Licensure, credential and/or federal employment requirements
Application for licensure, credentialing and/or federal employment generally still require the use of a legal name. Be aware that professional licensing requirements often necessitate the use of a legal name on all education documents including diplomas, i.e State Bar applications and federal employment applications. Two different names may result in rejection, delay, additional scrutiny or unforeseen complications.
Limitations & Appropriate Use
CSUMB reserves the discretionary right to deny or remove any name that is inappropriate or being used improperly.
