Learning Journey
As we have learned in previous learning journeys, reflection is a powerful tool for growth. There are two reflection activities for this journey: one focused on the manager and one for the employee. However, the manager can also benefit from participating in all activities.
- Manager: How Good Is Your Feedback?
The folks at MindTools have created a great assessment to help you gauge where you are. Allowing for 17 minutes to complete the assessment would be appropriate. Make sure to note your results so that you can compare them against the reassessment at the end of this journey
- Manager/Employee: Evaluating Previous Feedback
This reflective activity will explore how you responded to previous feedback.
Do you have time for more? The Giving & Receiving Feedback Skill Benchmark can be utilized by both the manager and direct report. Skillsoft will generate a curated list of learning opportunities for your development.
Complete the courses listed below and download the job aids for future reference. Please allow 60 - 70 minutes to complete this step of the journey. You must complete the associated test at the end of the course to receive any available training credits.
- Delivering Feedback That Encourages Growth (26 minutes)

Let’s practice what we have learned. Listed below are exercises for both the manager and the employee. Spending 15 minutes on each activity would be appropriate.
Manager Practice
Choose one of the models below.
Situation-Behavior-Impact (SBI) Framework Exercise
In this practice exercise, you will use the SBI framework to describe the situation, and the actual observed behavior, sticking to the facts and describing the behavior's impact, factually and nonjudgmentally, and ask about the feedback recipient's intent.Partnership Model Exercise
When there is a two-way partnership experience, there's a sense of trust and communality, which establishes the conditions for positive, lasting change. It means taking a humbler approach that involves asking questions, not giving instructions. In this exercise you will open a dialogue with the employee to begin building a partnership for growth.Manager and Employee Practice
