Cultural Programming CBSS brings relevant cultural programming to campus by welcoming authors, artists, scholars, and performers from throughout the African Diaspora to enrich the CSUMB experience with concerts, workshops, exhibits focused on engaging and inspiring Black students.

Come join us on August 22, 2022, for a reception to welcome incoming students! The reception is sponsored by the African Heritage Faculty and Staff Alliance and the Helen Rucker Center who are both committed to ensuring that our students have a successful experience at the university.

The Center for Black Student Success invites you to join a conversation with novelist, essayist, and professor Keenan Norris.
The Toni Morrison Authors Conversation Series Made Possible by Chevron
Norris will dialogue with HCOM Professor Umi Vaughan about the role of artists, especially writers, within social justice struggles, his own unique mission and writing process, and share his thoughts about the current crisis in American culture. He will also read excerpts from his second novel The Confession of Copeland Cane V, which will be published in June 2021.
Financial Coaches, Mecca and Kwesi Dreams (Black Money Matters Financial Literacy Series)
The Center for Black Student Success invites you to learn why Black Money Matters and how to make your money work for you.
Join financial coaches Mecca and Kwesi Dreams for a workshop on financial literacy directed at college-age Black youth. Through a series of practical exercises and in a fun, down-to-earth presentation style Mecca and Kwesi will give participants a solid base of information and good habits with which to build their financial future.

The Center for Black Student Success invites you to cook with Afro-Caribbean chef Roberto Pérez.
In preparation for Thanks Giving/Indigenous People’s Day Pérez will join HCOM Professor Umi Vaughan virtually to teach viewers how to prepare a meal and to discuss his organization Urban Pilón whose mission is to honor and preserve cooking traditions from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America while using completely natural, healthy ingredients. Participants will learn a classic recipe along with the history behind it.
