- The TRIO SSS programs offer a transitional summer program to help incoming freshmen and transfer students adjust to college life and prepare for success at CSUMB before their first semester. Students will move into housing assignments early and participate in 5-6 days of activities to set them up for success in college. Participants will:
- Learn about campus resources and become familiar with university procedures and expectations
- Build community with peers and a support network at CSUMB
- Develop independent living skills
- Assess and strengthen preparation for the academic rigor of college-level courses
- Engage in goal setting
TRIO SSS will cover ALL EXPENSES for this orientation, including meals and housing. Participation in Summer Academy is not required to be in TRIO. Please see below for more FAQs.
This was such a good experience... it really eased the transition tenseness and anxiety, and gave me a sense of identity and community. How can I apply for TRIO Summer Academy?
- TRIO Summer Academy is a bridge/extended orientation event for new, incoming TRIO participants (freshmen and transfers) in the week prior to fall semester. THERE IS NO SEPARATE APPLICATION FOR SUMMER ACADEMY. You’ll be asked about your interest in Summer Academy during your TRIO interview, and will receive information about the event after you are accepted to the program (if registration is still open).
- Spaces in Summer Academy are limited! Due to budget constraints and campus deadlines, and in order to maintain the quality of the event, not all eligible new participants will be able to participate in Summer Academy. We will continue to register students for the event as long as possible. The event usually closes in mid- to late-July, but this timeline may vary depending on spaces, budget, and other campus deadlines.
How much does Summer Academy cost? : TRIO Summer Academy is FREE! We will cover housing costs for residential students, meals for all students, and any activity fees.
Do I have to attend all of Summer Academy? : Yes - we will ask participants to commit to full-day participation on ALL the dates of Summer Academy. Please note that these are FULL days - our schedule typically runs from about 8:30am to 7/8pm! You will have breaks and time to rest, but the program does require a big commitment during the scheduled days. LIMITED schedule accommodations may be possible - please ask TRIO staff.
If I am a commuter student, can I attend Summer Academy? : Yes! We will cover housing for residential students, but those not living on campus are welcome to commute to the event. We will help with parking permits, etc. as needed.
Can my supporters participate in Summer Academy? : We offer a Welcome Session for supporters (parents, family, partners) to learn about TRIO and ways to support their students. After this session, we will ask supporters to depart so that we can start building our TRIO community - the remaining sessions are for TRIO participants only.
Do I have to attend Summer Academy to be in TRIO? : No - only a limited number of TRIO students participate in Summer Academy. Especially for first-time freshmen, the event is recommended but not required.
Does TRIO offer an Academy for students accepted in the spring? : TRIO does not currently have a version of Summer Academy for spring admits, but we do offer engaging orientations each semester for all new students.
