CSUMB Athletic Performance Innovation Lab

Athletes today are leveraging science and technology more than ever to reach peak performance. At CSUMB, we have the opportunity to be national leaders in this evolution. The Athletic Performance Innovation Lab is a pioneering collaboration between the Athletic Department and academic experts in kinesiology, business, and computer science. Together, we aim to use cutting-edge experimental technologies and scientific data analysis to enhance athlete performance in a first-of-its-kind effort at the collegiate level.
Data and Science Are Core
The lab’s foundation is built on data collection and analysis. By tracking key performance metrics, we empower coaches and athletes with actionable insights to optimize training outcomes.
Key capabilities include:
-
Equipping strength coaches with performance measurables
-
Establishing data-driven training protocols
-
Creating a unified data system for seamless communication across departments
-
Incorporating technology to maximize training efficiency and staff effectiveness
Current Research Projects
Despite shifting personnel and budgetary challenges, CSUMB is uniquely positioned to lead in the development of hybrid systems that integrate AI and smart resistance training tools. Our efforts support both athletic excellence and contribute to Monterey Bay’s growing innovation and tourism ecosystem.
Featured projects include:
-
Velocity-Based Training (VBT): Measuring exercise movement speed to prescribe accurate workloads—enabling affordable, scalable training across large groups.
-
Rotary Inertia Flywheel Resistance: Delivering high-velocity eccentric training to reduce joint stress while preparing athletes for high-performance demands. Integrated with VBT for personalized force and velocity tracking.
-
Force Plate & Vibration Technology: Providing movement assessments and corrective strategies to improve athlete safety and performance.
Long-Term Vision and Impact
The Athletic Performance Innovation Lab seeks to establish CSUMB as a national leader in applied athletic research. Our long-term goals include:
-
Competing and winning with fewer resources
-
Attracting, developing, and retaining elite talent
-
Unlocking new avenues for corporate partnerships and philanthropic support
Together, we are building a smarter, stronger future for Otter athletics.
