Summer Term Appointments

Campuses are not required to offer summer work first to all probationary and tenured faculty, but must first offer work to enough probationary and tenured faculty to satisfy the percentages identified for each campus. Of all faculty appointed in the summer term,the percentage by headcount who are probationary and tenured faculty who are offered an appointment must be no less than 33%. Each department or college will maintain a list of faculty who have been offered work.

Next, offer teaching assignments to qualified lecturers with 3 year appointment rights or 1 year appointment rights if their time base entitlement pursuant to Article 12 was not fully satisfied during the immediately preceding academic year. Assignments offered shall be up to the maximum timebase entitlement.

Then, offer teaching assignments to other qualified lecturers who taught in the immediately preceding academic year.

Finally,campuses may offer teaching assignments to any other candidates.

Salary

Summer salary rates for faculty members who were employed in a state-supported unit 3 appointment in the academic year preceding the summer term shall be based on the spring term salary rate, or on the salary rate for the most recent term worked during that academic year.

Faculty who were not employed in a unit 3 appointment in any of the terms immediately preceding summer term work do not have an academic year salary upon which to base their summer salary. Therefore,these faculty may be appointed at any appropriate salary level within classification code 2357 for self-support summer term employment or classification code 2457for state-support summer term employment.

If a course has an enrollment of less than 20 students, the faculty member’s salary shall be reduced by 5% for each student below 15. Salary shall be reduced to no lower than 65% of full salary. This applies to both state-support and self-support courses.

All tenuredand probationary faculty members employed in state-funded summer sessions whodo not receive a specific, compensated indirect instructional assignment in thesummer term shall receive an indirect instructional payment in the amount of$150 per each WTU of direct instructional work assigned for the summer term. Payments will be made approximately at theend of each month.

Service Salary Increases

WTUs taught by lecturers in state-supported summer terms count towards units required for SSI eligibility.
