Environmental Studies Student Katie Brown Receives Travel Fellowship
Environmental Studies undergraduate Katie Brown was recently awarded a National Association of Science Writers (NASW) Travel Fellowship to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting, an experience she describes as “transformative.” She was asked to act as a member of the press: she received a press pass and had to work within the constraints of strict deadlines to produce her first written piece. Katie covered a scientific session and then followed up with each individual presenter, where she discovered this work could very well be her future career.

I was exhausted yet exhilarated, finally realizing that there was a place for me in the world as a socially curious and scientifically committed individual.
Katie believes that her experiences and her degree in Environmental Studies will help her build the skills to become an effective science writer. She’s had a multitude of educational opportunities, which have inspired her to pursue a multidisciplinary approach. Katie strongly believes that understanding the intersectionality of social justice and environmental conservation is essential to properly addressing sustainability issues. Her commitment to these issues shines through in her work, where she weaves technical science into a more digestible and accessible form for the general population.
