Vargas-Aburto, who has a doctorate degree in physics and aerospace science, is scheduled to start Aug. 1.
California State University Chancellor Mildred Garcia has appointed Carlos Vargas-Aburto as Cal State Monterey Bay’s sixth university leader. He will serve as interim president and will join the Otter Raft this summer. He has a long career of leading higher education institutions, supporting social mobility and fostering community engagement.
Vargas-Aburto’s appointment is effective Aug. 1, pending the California State University Board of Trustees’ approval of his compensation at its July meeting. Andrew Lawson, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, will serve as Executive in Charge starting July 1, ensuring a smooth transition until Vargas-Aburto's arrival.
"I am so excited and believe that he is the right person, with the right experience, to fit with the Otter RAFT," said President Vanya Quiñones, who departs for the presidency of Cal Poly Pomona at the end of June. "He has the values and the experience to keep our momentum going. The university will be in good hands."
Vargas-Aburto brings more than three decades of experience in higher education, having served as a faculty member, researcher, provost and university president. A first-generation college graduate, he earned his Bachelor of Science in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, followed by two master's degrees, in aerospace science and physics, and a doctorate degree spanning both fields, all from the University of Michigan. His leadership path includes positions at Kent State University, Central State University and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, before most recently serving for 10 years as president of Southeast Missouri State University, home of the Redhawks.
Now, he's trading Redhawks for Otters, and by all accounts, he's ready to dive right in.
"I am truly excited to jump into the Otter Plunge and participate in campus traditions," Vargas-Aburto said on the day his appointment was announced. "Every institution has its own community, its own momentum and its own story still being written. I am looking forward to contributing to the great work already happening here and moving forward together."
Throughout his career, Vargas-Aburto has championed student achievement, supported inclusive learning environments and forged partnerships that strengthen the communities universities serve. He also has experience at an HBCU, an institution designated among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, which reflects values closely aligned with CSUMB's mission.
As an experienced president with a strong track record and the right background to keep momentum going, Vargas-Aburto is expected to provide steady, collaborative leadership as CSUMB continues advancing its strategic priorities for students and the Central Coast.
Campus community members will have the opportunity to meet Interim President Vargas-Aburto in person during the fall semester.
