MSCS FAQ

CSUMB’s MSCS offers eligible students an accelerated pathway to complete the degree in just one calendar year, helping students save both time and educational costs. Students benefit from experienced faculty, a broad curriculum across multiple areas of computer science, and a Central Coast location just about 90 minutes from Silicon Valley.

The accelerated pathway allows eligible students to complete the degree in one calendar year. Or through the traditional pathway of three to five fall and spring semesters, with optional summer courses available to customize their pace.

Yes, eligible students can complete the program in one calendar year by following the accelerated pathway. A calendar year consists of three consecutive terms: Fall, Spring and Summer.

The MSCS is an in-person program. Summer courses are offered fully online, providing additional flexibility for students who choose or need to take courses during the Summer term.

Tuition varies based on the number of units taken each semester, residency status, and other individual factors. For the most current tuition and fee information, visit CSUMB’s Tuition and Fees website.

Students looking to complete their degree on a shorter timeline may consider the accelerated pathway, which allows eligible students to earn the MSCS in one calendar year.

Applicants will need a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

While the MSCS program is primarily designed for students with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, applicants from other academic backgrounds are still welcome to apply and will be considered.

We encourage you to use your application to highlight any relevant preparation you may have, such as programming experience, technical coursework, or professional experience. Your application is a great opportunity to demonstrate your ability to learn and adapt to new technical concepts.

The program does not have prerequisite courses required to apply. However, because the MSCS curriculum is designed with a Computer Science foundation in mind, students entering from other fields may need to dedicate additional time to independently develop prerequisite concepts and technical skills in order to be successful in the coursework.

Please review the program curriculum to determine how your previous experience aligns with the program.

The program has five core areas; Systems, Theory, Data & Intelligence, Software Engineering, and Security. Students will need to take courses in at least four of these five areas.

Yes, students have two options. Complete either a thesis or a capstone project. Students interested in the thesis route will need to enroll in CST 697 – Thesis Planning.

Yes. MSCS students may have opportunities to work as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Research Assistants (RAs). Research assistantship opportunities may be available through individual faculty members and their research projects.

The GRE is not required for our program. However, a strong score on the GRE Subject Test strengthens your admission, particularly if you have a lower GPA or a Bachelor’s degree in another major.

Fall 2027 applications open Oct. 1, 2026. The priority application deadline is March 1, 2027, and the final application deadline is May 30, 2027. Applications submitted after the priority deadline will continue to be considered through the final application deadline.

We are currently working to obtain the necessary authorization to issue the required documentation for international students. We may not receive approval in time for the Fall 2027 cohort. If you are admitted and the authorization is still pending, your admission may need to be deferred to a later term.

We are currently exploring the possibility of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) opportunities for international students. CPT is currently not available for international MSCS students. Any updates regarding CPT availability will be reflected here as information becomes available.

Yes. Graduate students may apply for on-campus housing at CSUMB. However, housing is subject to availability and is not guaranteed. Please review CSUMB Housing and Residential Life for current housing options, rates and application information.

Yes. CSUMB provides resources and support for veterans, active-duty service members and military-connected students.
