A new coalition has honed in on the epicenter of a Monterey County coronavirus population hotspot: farmworkers. CSUMB’s Otter Cross Cultural Center issued the following statement in celebration of Pride Month and the landmark Supreme Court ruling on June 15 that provides protection for gay and transgender people under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlaws employment discrimination on the basis of sex:

SEASIDE, Calif., June 26, 2020 - Monterey County hotels and restaurants are reopening after months of closure because of the coronavirus. CSUMB’s Sustainable Hospitality Management Program in the College of Business (COB) is helping them get back to business safely and effectively.

California State University police chiefs on all 23 campuses, including CSUMB Police Chief Earl Lawson, have banned the use of the carotid control hold — commonly called a chokehold — and pledged to implement policing recommendations made by a federal task force in 2015.

The project “aims to create and preserve a historical record, giving voice to the diverse perspectives, memories, struggles and achievements of the faculty, as it worked collaboratively and sometimes contentiously, crossing disciplinary and other divides, to build the academic heart and soul of the university,” according to its introduction page.
