    Fully leveraging our proximity to the extraordinary "living laboratory" of Monterey Bay, CSUMB began a dive program from its earliest days. The program focused on recreational training, including introductory courses in open water SCUBA and advanced SCUBA rescue. In 2010, the scientific research diving program was born.

    Corey Garza, Ph.D., professor of marine science in CSUMB’s College of Science, was recently inducted as a 2020 fellow in the California Academy of Sciences. He joins a cohort of 13 other scientists from California and beyond as new members.

    In September, the office of Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced more than $1 million in federal grant funding for CSUMB under GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), a $600,000 grant for the PPOHA program (Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans) to prepare Latino CSUMB and UCSC students for graduate studies, and $155 million for Hispanic Serving Institutions in this year’s House appropriations bill.

    Greater Vision, an annual, agriculture-related, public education event organized by CSU Monterey Bay and the Grower-Shipper Association Foundation , returns on Monday, Oct. 5. The focus of the talks and panel sessions, all virtual online this year, is Climate Smart Agriculture: Current Impacts, Future Projections, Essential Skills.

    Kevin Cahill came to work at CSUMB in 1998, four years after the university opened. He started as the art director of Cal State Teach, an online education program for people in rural areas to complete their teaching credentials.

    In an old bank building in downtown Monterey, Jordan Leininger opened the massive steel door of a vault filled with historical treasures. The temperature and humidity-controlled space provides an ideal environment for storing delicate and aging documents and other artifacts, he explained.
