Three CSUMB student researchers earned first-place and honorable mention awards at the 38th Annual California State University Student Research Competition, which was held April 26-27 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Mariana Jimenez and Ilia Borromeo earned first place in Biological and Agricultural Sciences for "Exploring the Recovery of the Pismo Clam in Monterey Bay." Their faculty mentor is Alison Haupt.
Oscar Murillo-Espinoza received an honorable mention in Physical and Mathematical Sciences II for "Arithmetical Structures on Canoe Paddle Graphs." His faculty mentor is Alison Lynch.
Thirteen CSUMB researchers were selected to represent CSUMB at the competition, an annual event that brings together scholars from the 23 campuses of our CSU system. The competition showcases undergraduate and graduate research, scholarship, and creative works by recognizing outstanding student accomplishments across the 23 campuses.
Current undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni from all academic disciplines can participate. Each year, over 200 students from the 23 CSU campuses submit written papers and make oral presentations before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies, and universities in California. Students who compete in the CSU Student Research Competition can win $500 for first place and $250 for second place recognition in their session.
