Marine Science Student Kirby Bartlett Receives Honorable Mention
Kirby Bartlett, a marine science student, recently received an honorable mention for her National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program application. Kirby chose to pursue marine science to address the ocean’s health, specifically in regards to fisheries science and policy. After graduation, she plans to attend UC Santa Barbara to study small scale sustenance fisheries in Latin America.
In her time at CSUMB, she has taken part in UROC Scholars and NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program, which she recommends any and all sophomores interested in environmental research to apply for. Her advice to peers? “Don’t let imposters syndrome or the fear of rejection stop you from applying to opportunities.” She says that as a first-generation college student, she had great difficulty trying to navigate the complexities of a university and graduate school. But her time at CSUMB has provided her with the mentors and resources to complete - and excel in - the process.
