Student Housing Evacuation Plans

Your safety is our priority. In the event of an emergency, it’s important to know what to expect and where to go. Review the information below so you’re prepared.

What to Expect During an Evacuation

If an emergency occurs, your building — and possibly neighboring residential buildings — may be activated for evacuation.

You can expect:

  • Flashing lights and audible sirens
  • Instructions from Housing staff and emergency personnel
  • Direction to your designated emergency assembly area

All residents must evacuate immediately. Leave the building completely and do not reenter until a Housing staff member or emergency official gives permission.

What Residents Should Do During an Emergency

All residents living in student housing should:

  • Know all entrances and exits for your residence hall or apartment
  • Leave immediately and calmly at the first sound of a fire alarm
  • Report to your designated evacuation location
  • Check in with your RA or Housing professional staff for further instructions

Assisting Residents with Disabilities

If you live with someone who has a disability or special needs:

  • Assist them in exiting the building safely, if possible
  • If you need help, immediately notify an RA, professional staff member or emergency responder

We are committed to supporting all members of our community during an emergency.

Be Prepared

Keep essential items nearby at night in case you need to evacuate quickly:

  • Flashlight
  • Student ID
  • Keys
  • Shoes
  • Weather-appropriate clothing

Being prepared helps you respond calmly and safely.

Cal State Monterey Bay maintains fire safety records and reporting in accordance with federal regulations to support transparency and campus safety.

Fire Log

For the purposes of federal Higher Education Act (HEA) regulations, a fire is defined as any instance of open flame or other burning in a location not intended to contain it, or burning that occurs in an uncontrolled manner. Smoke or sparks without an open flame, even if a fire alarm is activated, do not meet this definition.

In compliance with 34 C.F.R. § 668.49(d), the university maintains a written fire log that records any fire reported in on-campus student housing facilities within the most recent 60-day period. The log includes both fires that were extinguished prior to reporting and those discovered while still burning.

The fire log includes information for on-campus residential facilities, including:

  • Main Campus residence halls
  • Frederick Park I and II
  • East Campus and Schoonover Park housing

Annual Fire Safety Report

Federal regulations (34 C.F.R. § 668.49) require colleges and universities to publish an annual Fire Safety Report. This report is made available to current students and employees and is provided to prospective students and employees upon request.

The report includes:

  • Fire safety policies and procedures
  • Instructions for reporting a fire
  • Emergency response information
  • Fire statistics for on-campus student housing facilities for the three most recent calendar years
