What is the Otter Welcome Team?
The Otter Welcome Team is a group of staff, faculty, and student leaders who serve as helpers to assist our students on Move-in Day. They help create a welcoming, seamless, and successful transition experience for new and continuing Otters to get students excited about their new homes. Any faculty and staff not needed elsewhere on campus for move-in support are welcome to help out. Our student leaders and student-athletes who arrive early to campus for their training also will help as part of the Welcome Team.
Roles of the Welcome Team
Whether you’re ready to lift some boxes or more inclined to answer questions, anyone can help out on the Otter Welcome Team. Roles you can fill based on your ability and campus knowledge:
- Movers - Assist with unloading vehicles, pushing moving carts, and carrying belongings.
- Greeters - Roaming helpers who open doors, provide information, and cheer students on.
- Information Booth - Provide information about campus events, Otter Days schedule, and help provide directions around campus.
- Recyclers - Help students break down their boxes, teach about waste diversion, and introduce Otters to CSUMB’s sustainability philosophy.
What’s expected of helpers?
Otter Welcome Team helpers are expected to work a four-hour shift, to greet and engage with our new and returning Otters, and to help make the move-in process smooth for our students and their supporters. In order to help achieve this, you’ll be expected to wear a provided Otter Welcome Team shirt so that you’re easily identifiable to students and supporters. We will be offering Zoom training to help orient our helpers to their roles.
What should I bring?
- Your Otter Welcome Team T-shirt. If you did not pick it up before, a shirt will be given to you on Move-in Day.
- Jacket that opens in the front so the shirt is still visible.
- Comfortable closed-toe shoes.
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Reusable water bottle
- Department name tag if you have one
- Any department, club or organization gear you’d like to wear that doesn’t block your shirt. We’d love for you to chat with our students about what you’re involved with on campus.
