Mascot and Community
Cal State Monterey Bay’s otter identity shapes campus traditions, community spirit and place-based names rooted in its coastal environment.
Otter Identity and Traditions
Cal State Monterey Bay’s mascot is the sea otter (Enhydra lutris), a species native to the California coast. While distinct from river otters and other members of the otter family, the campus community commonly refers to itself simply as “Otters.”
The university mascot, Monte Rey, represents the spirit and energy of the campus. Monte Rey is based in Associated Students and participates in events on and off campus.
A Community Called a Raft
Groups of students, alumni and fans are known as a “Raft,” reflecting how sea otters gather in the ocean — linked together for support and connection. The term is often used to describe the campus community, including at events and in school spirit traditions.
Each year, Homecoming is celebrated through “The RAFT” (Reunion and Family Traditions), bringing together students, alumni and supporters.
