Dr. Aparna Sreenivasan

Department Chair 2023-Present

It is a pleasure to serve as the Chair of the Department of Biology, Agriculture, and Chemistry at CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB). As an Indian American who has traveled the world, I have experienced diverse perspectives and learned and studied many different cultures. I bring those experiences, as well as my doctorate in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, a strong background in science communication, a plethora of work experience, and a passion for mentoring to this job.

In the Department of Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry at CSUMB, the faculty and staff are committed to providing our diverse and talented students with hands on experiential learning and transformative experiences. We have embedded Course Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURES) into most of our courses in the Biology program so that every student gets at least one or several research experiences. Our Agriculture, Plant and Soil Sciences (AGPS) major provides students with hands on training, robust research experiences, and internships across the Monterey Bay region, capitalizing on our proximity to the “Salad Bowl of the World”. We also have three very successful minors – in Chemistry, Biology, and AGPS, all which provide students with additional breadth and depth in key areas that make them stand out to employers and advanced degree programs.

We are very proud of our students who present at scientific conferences, win science awards, are leaders on campus, and end up in graduate and professional programs, and jobs across the country. We ensure that the Biology, Agriculture, and Chemistry Department is a welcoming environment that fosters critical thinking and stewardship: Two areas that are very important in our world today. By supporting our students at every level of their learning journey, we provide
transformative experiences that create new ambassadors of science and high-level communicators.

Biology, Agriculture, and Chemistry is a community of teacher-scholars, life-long learners, and passionate mentors. We look forward to having you become a part of that community.
