Small gestures, big impact

We’re excited to announce a University-wide initiative called HelloMatters. This initiative speaks to the heart of who we are and who we strive to be—a community rooted in care, connection, and belonging.

These “micro-progressions of community, culture, and connectivity” are the small, intentional moments where we recognize, uplift, and personally connect with our students. A kind word, a thoughtful question, or even a moment of genuine encouragement can build a bridge that helps students feel seen, supported, and valued.

HelloMatters [he-loh mat-ters] noun: a simple greeting can transform someone’s day and build and even stronger Otter campus community

Why does this matter?

Because these connections aren’t small at all—they are foundational. They can inspire a student to persevere through challenges, feel that they belong here, and know that we are invested in their success.

The HelloMatters campaign encourages us to build bridges with our students, creating a sense of community that fosters academic success and personal growth. These small acts of kindness can make a difference, reminding students that they are an integral part of our Otter Raft.

How to Participate

We are asking all faculty and staff to smile and acknowledge every student they walk by and offer a warm "hello," a smile, or even a friendly nod as eyes meet to create a moment of connection that reinforces our culture of care and belonging.

Any interested employees can also pick up a stack of stickers and bookmarks to share with students as you engage in these simple conversations. Stickers and bookmarks can be picked up from the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Office, located in Building 47 2nd floor suite 201.

Throughout the year, we encourage employees and students to attend events and programs and use those opportunities to engage with each other and continue to build an even stronger Otter campus community.
