College of Science Strategic Plan, Vision, and Mission

CSUMB Students having conversations

The College of Science uses its vision, mission, strategic plan, and core values as guiding frameworks to ensure continuous alignment with both student needs and real-world demands. Its vision defines the long-term impact it seeks to make in scientific innovation, workforce development, and community engagement, while its mission clarifies its commitment to high-quality education, research, and service.

Through its strategic plan, the College translates these broad ideals into measurable goals—such as enhancing experiential learning, strengthening industry partnerships, integrating emerging technologies, and expanding student support systems. Core values such as integrity, inclusivity, collaboration, innovation, and excellence shape everyday decisions, from curriculum design to faculty recruitment and student engagement initiatives. By regularly assessing outcomes, gathering student and employer feedback, and adapting programs to evolving scientific and workforce trends, the College ensures that academic offerings remain relevant, rigorous, and responsive—preparing graduates not only for career success, but for meaningful contributions to society.

Our Foundation for Excellence

We will advance science, foster creativity, and engage communities to transform lives.

The aim of the college is to advance science and foster creativity, but in the process we will engage and support the community and impact lives.  The ideas behind transforming lives include faculty, staff, and students and those impacted by the scientific and creative discoveries generated within the college.

The College of Science leverages the unique strengths of the Monterey Bay region to provide an inclusive and hands-on learning environment that cultivates scientific curiosity, social responsibility, and lifelong learning.

The mission statement emphasizes that the college is uniquely positioned due to our location in Monterey, which allows us to emphasize a variety of programs in ways that support the diverse needs of the region and provide unique opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. The choice to include “inclusive” and “hands-on learning” emphasizes the pedagogical and research training approach we want to define us.  Finally, our overarching goals: curiosity, social responsibility, and lifelong learning, emphasize three of the key priorities of the college, though not to the exclusion of other priorities.

The College of Science developed its own Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Core Values in alignment with the CSUMB Strategic Plan based on surveys, discussions, and feedback from across the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders of the College. The initiative was led by the College of Science Executive Committee, together these elements define who we are as a college and guide us in achieving our objectives.

This strategic plan aims to advance science, foster creativity, and engage the community. Key values are being community-centered and evidence-based.

The plan outlines four key areas of focus:

  • Student Success: Ensuring student well-being, academic excellence, and affordable access to education.
  • Inclusive Excellence: Creating an inclusive environment for all students and faculty, and promoting diversity and equity.
  • Regional Stewardship and Global Engagement: Strengthening community partnerships, expanding international opportunities, and engaging with alumni.
  • Organizational Learning: Improving communication, effectively utilizing resources, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

This plan will guide the college's development and success over the next five years.
