As an employee, it’s important to understand what's expected of you in the workplace and what you can expect from Cal State Monterey Bay and the broader CSU system.

Your Rights and Responsibilities

This page provides a high-level overview of key related policies and processes. Refer to your employee handbook and the CSU Statewide System policies website for the most up-to-date information about employee rights and responsibilities.

Conflict of Interest

Employees are not to engage in any activity that is inconsistent with or in conflict with their duties. Examples of such activity include:

  • Using university influence or resources for private gain,
  • Divulging confidential information to unauthorized sources, or
  • Accepting a gratuity from anyone seeking to do business with the university.

Employees should consult with their department administrator prior to engaging in any activity that may conceivably result in a conflict of interest violation.

According to Conflict of Interest provisions, public officials may not make, participate in making, or in any way use or attempt to use their official positions to influence a governmental decision in which they know or have reason to know they have a disqualifying conflict of interest. University employees shall not vote, make recommendations, or in any way participate in personnel or financial decisions if such participation constitutes a conflict of interest. Annual disclosure statements are required upon appointment to certain designated positions and are updated annually

Refer to the CSU Conflict of Interest Policies and Programs website for full information.

CSUMB is actively engaged in increasing, recognizing, and celebrating our diversity and building inclusive excellence. We are committed to providing an inclusive learning and working environment where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Discrimination, Harassment and/or Retaliation

Cal State Monterey Bay is committed to providing a welcoming and respectful environment for all.

The CSU Systemwide policy prohibits discrimination, harassment and retaliation, sexual misconduct, sexual exploitation, dating and domestic violence, and stalking against students, employees, and third parties.

The policy also includes the procedures for addressing complaints made against students and complaints made against employees and third parties.

Refer to the CSU Discrimination, Harassment & Retaliation website for full information.

Management Personnel (MPP) and Executive Outside Employment Disclosure

MPP and Executive employees are individually responsible and held accountable for ensuring that their outside employment activities do not create any actual or perceived conflict of commitment and/or conflict of interest to the CSU.

All full-time and part-time MPP (including Executive) employees are expected to monitor and report any and all outside work for which they are being compensated.

Learn more about the policy at the CSU Outside Employment website.

Management Personnel (MPP) Reconsideration

MPP employees can request reconsideration of personnel decisions that are adverse to the MPP employee concerning retention, evaluation, promotion, assignment, re-assignment and/or hours of work.

Whistleblower and Whistleblower Retaliation Complaints

Any employee of the CSU or third party may report what that person reasonably believes is an improper governmental activity or condition that significantly threatens the health or safety of CSU employees or visitors.

Such reports may be made to the Equal Opportunity/Whistleblower Compliance Unit at the Chancellor’s Office or to the person on each campus who is designated to receive such reports. No form is required, but the reporter is encouraged to include as much supporting evidence of the improper governmental activity or the health or safety condition as possible.

Retaliation for making a whistleblower report is prohibited by federal and state law and by CSU policy.
